FOR SALE: Fly, a Historic Essex Fishing Smack (1805-1842) One of the oldest sailing vessels still in operation worldwide

We are pleased to present for sale the "Fly," an Essex smack, one of the oldest and rarest sailing vessels still active. Built between 1805 and 1842, this wooden cutter, unmotorized and gaff-rigged, was originally designed for wild oyster fishing in the Thames estuary. Over the centuries, it has also served coastal fishing, sea rescue, and even smuggling, making "Fly" a vessel with a history as rich as it is varied.

Technical Specifications:

  • Overall length: 15 m
  • Hull length: 10.98 m
  • Beam: 3 m
  • Draft: 1.20 m
  • Displacement: 7.5 T
  • Construction: Hull made of mahogany and oak, gaff rigged, mainsail in linseed oil-treated linen with cachou dye, spars refurbished in 2022.
  • Equipment: VHF, GPS/fishfinder with large screen, solar panels, complete anchoring gear, inflatable tender with 20 HP Honda engine.

Restoration and Exceptional Condition:

Fly has benefited from careful restoration respecting its authenticity while adapting it to modern requirements. The boat is in perfect condition, with a solid and healthy hull. The linen mainsail, partly hand-sewn, reflects the attention to detail. The interior layout, rustic yet comfortable, offers a functional space with a large double berth, a traditional wood stove, and plenty of storage.

A Sailing Vessel Rich in History:

This unique sailing vessel could well be the oldest pleasure yacht still sailing in the world, with origins possibly dating back to 1805. "Fly" has sailed through the centuries, alternating as a fishing vessel, a fast police cutter, and a prize-winning racing yacht in smack regattas. Today, it continues to sail with the same grace and robustness that made it renowned.

Navigation and Safety:

Fly is equipped for offshore navigation, with a life raft, life jackets with satellite distress beacons, and new batteries offering extended autonomy.

This sailing vessel is the perfect compromise between tradition and modern comfort, ideal for cruises where authenticity and well-being are paramount. It is not only a pleasure to sail but also a haven of peace for its occupants.
