History and rarity: a Rechlin from the first series
This cabin boat is not just any classic, but a piece of watersports history. It is the first type (at the time still without a name) built at the VEB Rechlin yard, with a design by Hans Böttcher. In the period 1956â1957, according to the available information, only 41 examples were produced, executed in mahogany. The boat was first presented in 1956 at the Leipzig Business Fair, which makes her background especially interesting for enthusiasts of historic motorboats and classic German yard quality. This specific example has hull number 22, underlining its provenance and authenticity. Documentation includes, among other things, information about the build location and an engine document.
Hull, build and appearance: mahogany and V-bottom
The hull is made of wood, with the warm and timeless look that makes mahogany boats so beloved. The V-bottom contributes to good directional stability and comfortable cruising in varying conditions on inland waters. The silhouette is classic: a cabin motorboat with elegant lines, where the woodwork and proportions immediately evoke the atmosphere of the 1950s. At the same time, the boat is practically laid out for relaxed day trips, with wheel steering from the outside position, so you maintain optimal contact with the water and surroundings while underway.
Restoration and recent work
In 2022â2023 the boat was thoroughly addressed, with attention to structure and woodwork. The underside was treated, with seams laminated with mahogany and bonded using the West System, a well-known method in the wooden boat world to build durable joints and sealing. In addition, the foredeck and aft deck were replaced, using mahogany and American pine. In 2025 the boat was taken out of the water again for maintenance and antifouling was applied.
Engine and performance: Mitsubishi diesel inboard (2021)
A major plus is the modern inboard diesel engine: a Mitsubishi L3E/CM 3.27 from 2021 with 27 hp and three cylinders, electric start. This setup suits the character of the boat well: relaxed cruising at around 6 km/h, yet with enough reserve to move along briskly when desired, with a stated top speed of up to approx. 18 km/h. The boat is equipped with a flexible gearbox and a water-lubricated propeller shaft with a 3-blade propeller (14â/12â), contributing to smooth power transmission and a pleasant feel underway. The diesel tank has a capacity of 50 litres and is fitted with a tank gauge with sensor, so you can easily monitor the fuel level.
Steering, comfort and equipment on board
Steering is via a wheel from the outside position. There is also an electric toilet, with direct discharge to open water. On board, 12V electrics are available, with alternator, voltmeter and two batteries: one starter battery and one for lighting and consumers. For extra safety and convenience, an electric bilge pump has been installed.
For navigation and orientation, the boat is equipped with a depth sounder and fishfinder, which is not only useful when cruising in shallower areas, but also attractive for those who enjoy recreational fishing. Outside you will find practical features such as a sprayhood, cockpit table, exterior cushions, fenders and lines, plus a flag holder. Cushions are also present in both cabin and cockpit, making the boat inviting for long days on the water with comfortable seating and lounging. Port and starboard navigation lights are fitted, suitable for cruising at dusk or returning to the harbour.
Cruising experience and use: day trips, leisure boating and a head-turner on the water
This Rechlin has been used on inland waters for day trips and leisure cruising. Thanks to her dimensions, mooring is generally straightforward, while the classic appearance ensures you will almost always draw attention in the harbour or at the jetty. It is a boat for enthusiasts who not only want to cruise, but also value style, history and the feel of a true classic wooden motorboat.
Finally, an old trailer is included, intended to move the boat inside a shed (not for use on public roads). This also covers the practical aspect of storage and moving. This Rechlin cabin motorboat combines rare provenance with a modern diesel installation and an appearance that is seldom seen today.
